As per a research conducted by Neislen Informate Panel mobile apps Google developed mobile apps are more popular in India. It says Google’s apps have upper hand in 5 out of 7 app categories, where it leads in email, search, GPS, and video segments.

Social networking, music and games are the most popular categories of apps for smartphone users. Social networking and Gaming apps are mostly downloaded by people in the age of 18-24. Candy crush, Clash of Clans and Angry birds being the most popular gaming app and WhatsApp is the most popular social networking app.

Mobile App Trends for Targeted Users

Indian mobile app users have changed dramatically over the two years from 2012 to 2014. It rose from 60% in 2012 to 90% in 2014. Statistics say that:

  • 77 % of people in India have up to 30 apps on their smartphone, with men download 93% and women 87%
  • 43% of women are into social networking as compared to men 38 %.
  • 17% of Indians only download the free apps available for their phone via sites such as store.ovi.com, playstore and app store.
  • 48% of smartphone users mostly rely on apps throughout the day, for their daily activities.

Research has shown a considerable variation in age groups using mobile applications.

  • People below the age of 18- 11%
  • In the age group of 18 to 24- 52%
  • In the age group of 25 to 27- 30%
  • ABOVE THE AGE OF 35- 8%

45% of users are from top 4 metro cities, 19% from 5-9 top cities, and 24% from small towns. As per a research conducted by tecks.co.in Android has a market share of 90% and iPhone app developments in India is around 2%.

A study conducted by ASSPCHAM reveals that app download number is expected to cross 9 billion in India and the majority of apps downloaded by users are free of cost.
