- OpenAI tests Sponsored Agents; tap an ad in ChatGPT, and you can open a clearly labelled conversation with that business’s own agent instead of landing on its website.
- They keep that conversation separate from both your original chat and from ChatGPT’s independent answers.
- Advertisers can now create, update and analyse campaigns with plain-language prompts, through an Ads Manager plugin.
- Ads Manager suggests copy and imagery read off your landing page, an opt-in setting adapts headlines to the conversation and auto-translates them.
- ChatGPT Ads now runs inside HubSpot and Shopify, the first CRM and ecommerce partners. The Shopify app goes international on 23 September.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
What OpenAI Actually Shipped
Most coverage led with OpenAI Sponsored Agents, and fairly, it is the only genuinely new surface here. But three of the four launches are infrastructure, and infrastructure is usually the more honest signal of where a company thinks the money is
The new ad surface. OpenAI Sponsored Agents let a user start a conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad inside ChatGPT. OpenAI frames it as depth rather than reach: seeing a product is “often just the beginning,” and the follow-up questions are where the decision actually gets made. Hence, tt is in test with selected advertisers in the United States.
The campaign console. Moreover advertisers can build and manage campaigns by writing prompts in ChatGPT Work, using an Ads Manager plugin. Point it at a website or a brief and it produces a campaign, reads performance back, and recommends what to change.
The creative assist. Inside Ads Manager, drafting an ad now returns suggested copy and imagery generated from the landing page and the campaign objective. OpenAI is explicit that the advertiser reviews and edits before anything is added.
The distribution. So ChatGPT Ads now sits inside HubSpot and Shopify, OpenAI’s first CRM and first ecommerce partners. Hence, the stated logic is that adopting a new channel “shouldn’t require businesses to rebuild the way they work.”
HOW IT WORKS
How A Sponsored Agent Works
This is a genuine sequence, so it’s worth walking in order. So, OpenAI’s own worked example is a dining table.
01
An ad appears in the conversation
Same as today. ChatGPT surfaces something relevant to what you’re asking about, either what you were looking for, or something you hadn’t considered.
02
You choose to go deeper
Instead of clicking straight through to a website, you can open a conversation with the business’s sponsored agent. It is clearly labelled as sponsored, and it’s opt-in, the user chooses to start it.
03
You interrogate the product
Will the table fit my space? How many people does it seat? How do I care for the finish? You explain what matters to you and ask follow-ups, the part of buying that a static ad has never been able to handle.
04
The handoff
When you’re ready, you follow a link to the business’s site to take the next step. The sale still closes off-platform.
The separation matters most. Moreover, OpenAI states twice that a Sponsored Agent conversation is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the chat you started in. That’s the line protecting the thing the whole product rests on, if people stop trusting that an unpaid answer is unpaid, the ad inventory is worth nothing.
THE TOOLING
What Changes For Marketers
These aren’t a sequence, they’re three separate pieces of the campaign job being handed to the model.
01
Briefs become campaigns
Natural-language prompts create, update and analyse campaigns. A website or a brief goes in, a campaign, a performance read and a recommended next step come out.
02
Copy and imagery suggested
Ads Manager drafts headlines, descriptions and images from your landing page and objective. You review and edit before anything joins the campaign.
03
Text that adapts per conversation
Enable it and your existing headlines and descriptions are rewritten to fit the context of the conversation the ad lands in, and translated into the user’s preferred language.

THE CAVEAT
What Nobody Can Tell You Yet
In General, there are no numbers in this announcement. Therefore, no click-through rates, no conversion data, no pricing, no advertiser names. That isn’t an oversight, OpenAI Sponsored Agents are in limited test with selected US advertisers, so the data doesn’t exist yet. So, treat anything you read this week as a read on direction, not evidence.
What does a good sponsored agent sound like?
Nobody has written one at scale. The craft doesn’t exist yet.
Who writes it?
A copywriter produces finished lines. An agent needs a brief, boundaries and a personality, closer to a service designer’s job than a creative’s.
What happens when it oversells?
A banner that exaggerates is an ad. An agent that misleads you in conversation feels like a salesperson lying to your face.
How do you measure a coversation?
Impressions and clicks don’t describe a five-turn exchange. The metrics will have to be invented alongside the format.
To enumerate, the broader shift is worth naming plainly. Advertising has spent three years learning to behave like entertainment, to earn the watch rather than interrupt it. So, this is the next move in the same directio, the ad stops being something you look at and becomes something you talk to. Same underlying logic, one step further.
